What is Ayahuasca?

Ayahuasca is a vine that grows in the Amazon region. Ayahuasca has been used for thousands of years by shamans as a sacred medicine and sacrament, to commune with the world of spirit.

Ayahuasca opens a portal to the spirit world. It is a very sacred plant in the Amazon. It enables the one drinking this magical elixir to grow and transform in one’s life.

To drink Ayahuasca with a shaman is an opportunity to transcend into the sacred and should be undertaken with great respect. When one imbibes the sacred medicine, one must approach the Spirit of Ayahuasca with the proper intention, to be open to learning and receiving the help that is offered.

When people come to work in a ceremony with Ayahuasca, their psychic senses are opened and enable the person to learn directly from the spirit world. The medicine once imbibed becomes a part of the person; the medicine is always with them afterward. The great Amazonian spirit medicine; Mother Ayahuasca.

  • The ayahuasca experience has been described as transcendental, profound, or enlightening. You can experience an altered state of consciousness, out of body experiences, euphoria, and possibly hallucinations. Some participants shared that the ayahuasca ceremony was a therapeutic experience that left them feeling a sense of deep gratitude, intense emotions, and an immense understanding of one’s life and all of the beings within it.

  • In the broadest sense, yes; for healthy individuals, ayahuasca is safe. If you are under the guidance of an experienced shaman, your safety is kept in high regard. While it is virtually impossible to become addicted to ayahuasca or overdose on ayahuasca, side effects are possible. They can include: panic, paranoia, vomiting, and diarrhea. Although distressing, these side effects will pass.

  • Diabetes, previous heart attack, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, high blood pressure, had heart surgery, aneurysm, stroke, schizophrenia, epilepsy, and infectious disease. These conditions are conditions that would restrict your ability to participate in Ayahuasca Ceremonies because of the risk of complications your health or the inherent risk to other participants.

  • No.

It is not recommended or advisable to take ayahuasca without the guidance and supervision of a qualified shaman.

  • The purge is an important part of the ayahuasca ceremony, and it usually takes the form of vomiting – but sometimes it can take the form of diarrhea. One of the main aspects of participating in an ayahuasca ceremony is purification, so the purge is a way to prepare the body for what is coming.

In the spiritual sense, the purge allows you to shed anything that no longer serves you, anything that is weighing you down, or anything that is holding you back. It is an energetic cleansing that will help clear vibrational imprints and emotional blockages, as well as physical toxins. Many people purge strongly in their initial ceremony experiences, and move into deeper experiences as these blockages are removed. Other people experience the reverse: they do not purge early on but have cleansing purges in later experiences.

  • To prepare for the ayahuasca ceremony and have the best possible experience, it is recommended that participants avoid using alcohol, caffeine, cigarettes, drugs, or having sex for two weeks before taking part in the ceremony. This is meant to purify the body.

Participants are also encouraged to follow a specific diet, usually a vegan or vegetarian diet vegetarianism or veganism, for a few weeks before the retreat. This will help rid the body of toxins.

  • The shaman or an assistant will serve the plant brew for each ceremony participant. The dose is calculated individually, and it is based a personal questionnaire. Your psychological and physical circumstances, such as the origin and intensity of disease or other reasons that led you to take ayahuasca.

  • After experiencing intense visions or being in a trance-like state, the effects of the plant brew will start to recede. You may feel tired, and some participants mentioned being unable to describe their feelings during the ceremony. The final stage is the ceremonial offering to Pachamama (Mother Earth). Afterward, you can reflection your experiences with the shaman or an assistant. We recommend that you wait until the following morning before you eat any food.

  • The length of time to feel the effects of ayahuasca can vary from person to person and ceremony to ceremony. It is said that the effects of ayahuasca can last anywhere from a few hours to the whole night. Even when the conscious effects have worn off, the medicine continues to work with the body and energetic fields in ways that are not always perceptible. A few participants have reported feeling the effects of for weeks and months afterward – especially if they listen to icaros.

“My Ayahuasca experience was life changing. There were moments that were dirty, dark, disgusting and terrifying. I was able to see that I was holding on to years of suppressed trauma. I got to the root of the trauma, processed it, and then connected with my most divine self. I went into my second ceremony feeling so broken, but I came out realizing that broken crayons can still color..”

“I'm now able to get restful sleep every night, and I have an overall sense of peace. For many years, I suffered from PTSD, anxiety, and insomnia. I tried a number of modalities to help me with these issues, to no avail. After researching alternative methods, I learned about Ayahuasca, but I was scared to go alone. Going with ThatMan Travels made me feel more comfortable. Carey took care of everything, and he made me feel very safe and comfortable during such a vulnerable experience!”
